There are few questions in life that are as important and impactful as the question of what happens when we die. People spend theie whole lives in quest of that great truth never coming close to an answer they find suitable. Too many lose sight of their own lives in pursuit of an answer as to what death is.
AFTER DEATH is a documentary that probes beyond the veil and asks – what is death and is there an afterlife?
With AFTER DEATH we are given interviews with medical personnel that have explored life after death from a scientific side; looking for facts and data to prove what happens after we die. The documentary offers testimonials from several people who died and recall clearly what they experienced, the good and the bad. Most tell of leaving their bodies and feeling welcomed into the afterlife by family and loved ones and then gaining an audience with God. A few even tell of what happened when they were faced with the prospect of eternal damnation and what horror that was. Beautiful images of the stars, and galaxies are paired with digital interpretations of the afterlife to give life to the stories we are told and their dramatizations. The filmmakers never intrude on the film, letting the storytellers have their say instead.
While there is a clear aim at the Christian audience with the film, it never feels particularly heavy-handed with prostelitizing, and lets the scientists have their say. While there isn’t a lot of time given to the idea of how other religions may see the afterlife, it is mentioned and given some time.
For those looking for definitive answers you may be disappointed because even here, it’s clear that you need to make up your own mind as to what the end will be and what the preceding means in relation to it. There is comfort to be found here though for the faithful and for those looking for hope when faced with the end. It is very clear that the people that experienced what they re-tell truly believed what they went through and gained only their comfort and the knowledge of their truth in coming forward. What we take from their truth is up to us. The stories told are gripping and at times horrifying and clearly changes these people’s lives.
It’s a very well made film, with striking visuals and, while you’re own beliefs will determine how impactful the documentary is, it’s made with heart and skill. I appreciated that the featured speakers were able to tell their stories uninterrupted and pass along their experiences and the visualizations enhanced their stories greatly.
