The Spoiler Sports Podcast – in Memoriam

Several years ago I was asked by my friend Jason Purdue to do a podcast with him. He knew I had been doing one with friends for several years, and we were both geeks with a love of movies and pop culture. He had thought we could do a podcast together and cover movies, news, and other fun geek topics.

Jason had big hopes for the podcast and the germ of a website he had in his heart. His thought was that maybe we could marry the two and get some wider interest from folks.

Who knew?

We never did anything with the podcast or anything else beyond these two episodes. I don’t think we hit the tone he was looking for, and if memory serves, I cursed. They stand now as two reminders of the man that was, and I am grateful to be able to share him, his views, his passion, and his voice with the world.

We recorded two podcasts together as tests to see how we worked together, how we wanted to do things, and what we had to work with. We lost Jay in late 2023 after a long battle with his health. Jay was a fighter, and he fought all the way to the end, leaving a wife and two children behind, as well as many, many friends who were grateful to have had him in their lives.

I remember Jay asking me to go through a novel his uncle had left behind after his own death. Jay had wanted to read it but his uncle, having never written before, had never formatted it to be easily read. I said sure, I can do that. I had not expected the book to be nearly 1,000 pages. I worked on it for a handful of months when I could, but I had to call it after 400 pages. I felt awful I didn’t finish the book for him, and I still do.

Jay had so much passion, so many dreams, I feel like the very, very least I can do is put our two podcasts out into the world, so people can hear this great guy, and share some of his passion for geekdom. It’s ray, it’s warts and all, but I am glad I found these and can share them.

Jason Purdue deserves it.
