Missing the Point

For a culture so entrenched in pop culture, we Americans sure do miss the point. I suppose it’s because we have learned to ingest things at a surface level, and not look deeper. I get it. It makes it hard to enjoy some things when you learn that they stand in opposition of your beliefs. I mean, when you learn that you are part of the machine that’s being raged against, well, that’s a bummer. When you find out that “Born in the U.S.A.” is a critique, and not a celebration, well, that’s a drag. The thing is, though, that there’s a lot of things people tune out in order to cling to their beliefs that they’re the “Good Guys,” and one of those things has become history.

I have come to understand that the last thing that is going to happen is reasoning someone into being reasonable, or being sensible to the senseless. We’re past the point of polite discourse, and people’s beliefs have become nearly religious, so it is what it is. So, I won’t change minds with my blogs, but I can at least point out a couple things that are being consistently ignored by the Right-Wing in America.

  1. The good guys are never the ones who are wearing masks as they grab people off the street, or from their homes, and ferry them away in unmarked vehicles.
  2. The good guys don’t send troops into cities when there is no uprising, or dangerous activity happening – “dangerous” in the sense that lives and property are not at risk, let’s be real here.
  3. Good guys don’t curtail free speech, or in this case, speech they don’t agree with.
  4. Good guys don’t target their opposition and threaten them with arrest. You can claim those people are breaking the law all you want, but once you personally call them out and demand they be arrested and charged when you are in power, then maybe that’s an abuse of said power.
  5. Good guys don’t cut funding to programs that families rely on because they have no other choice. You certainly don’t do it to get back at the opposing political party.
  6. Good guys don’t cheer when people lose rights.
  7. Good guys don’t refuse to swear in a member of the opposing political party who won a fair election, especially becasuse…
  8. Good guys don’t hide information that could lead to pedophiles being arrested and prosecuted.
  9. Good guys don’t abuse their power, and status as President of the United States to foment petty grievances and mock political, and cultural, rivals.
  10. Good guys don’t punish a nation with lost jobs, lost income, and threats of worse when their political rivals and they are in a stalemate on issues. (And this is absolutely a “both sides” issue.)
  11. Good guys don’t use their position as leader of the nation as a secret money making scheme. Oh, sure, they all benefit from the position, but good guys don’t openly take money and smile as the cameras are on.
  12. Godo guys don’t shrug off the law-breaking of their underlings.
  13. Good guys don’t threaten to buy or invade their allies.
  14. Good guys don’t hide their nation’s history.
  15. Good guys don’t demand one religion rule over all.
  16. Good guys don’t flout the founding principles of the nation because they don’t align to the party’s new ideals.
  17. Good guys don’t curtail and cajole the press when they don’t get positive coverage.
  18. Good guys don’t ignore insurrections and gaslight about one when it benefits their party.
  19. Good guys don’t preach hatred of people who are not like them.
  20. Good guys don’t rule through fear.

The list can truly go on, and on, and on. Easily. And yes, I could “both sides” a few of these entries, but the fact is that the Republicans are in full power at every level – even the Supreme Court, which once upheld the Consitution but has become a rubber stamp for Trump – so right now, this is all about them. And the Republicans are not the good guys. They have become a Christian-fascist political party bent on domination, and greed. There’s very little of the teachings of Christ to be seen. This is Trump’s party, and he is the golden calf that leads it. Those that follow him, and his “teachings” follow a false prophet and spit in the face of the things that Christ taught. This is an easy and obvious list that took little time to come up with, which is telling because, what aren’t we seeing?

But we are a nation that loves guns more than we love one another, and the idea of someone’s right to hate being curtailed is like proclaiming God is dead in a church.

Well, I can’t say that, but I can say that Lady Liberty’s been blindfolded and thrown into a van, and is slated for deportation. In her place will stand a gold painted idol people can kneel before, and give thanks to instead. One thing absent from the statue will be a white hat, that much has become very, very clear.
