This past Saturday I did the first Downtown Flint Comix Con in, well, Downtown Flint. I have always wanted to bring conventions, fun ones that is, back to Flint, but have never had the money where I could even consider it more than as a day dream so I admire anyone that can put something like this together. This show marked the one year anniversary of Flint’s free comic paper Flint Comix and was their way of saying thanks to everyone that supported them. The show was a mix of comic shops and local and regional comic creators with a couple psychics and an airbrush tattooist thrown in for good measure. I knew a few of the guests – Mark Bloodworth, and Gemma Keech among others – and met a couple great local artists named Pat Hardin and Bob Gonzalez, so that was fun. It is also great when friends stop by to say hello and, with such an inexpensive show (four bucks to get in) it encouraged that.
The show was fun, though there is a lot of room for improvement (more needs to be going on during the show to keep people there or to encourage them to return during the day) but it was a good start. And it is always good when you are treated well at a show, that helps a ton, for sure. I didn’t really sell much – buttons, a small print, and one book – but it was a fun day, for sure. It didn’t hurt that it was two blocks from home. HAHA.
