More Under the Radar Movies You Should Check Out!

A few months ago I wrote a blog about a few movies that I dig that are a little under the radar and deserve more attention and love and I thought I’d make another list of some films that don’t always get the love they deserve.

THE BOOGENS

This early ‘80s romp was a regular on cable back in the day and something I caught the name of and which stuck with me ever after. What the crap was a boogens, I wanted to know? It lived in memories and relative obscurity until it made it to home video and then was released in a prettied up blu ray but it still doesn’t seem to have a lot of fans.

This is a film about rambunctious young adults in mining country and the horror they discover when creatures that live in them thar hills are loosed.

The creatures are creepy and very weird looking and this is just a fun monster movie.

RIKI-O – The Story of Riki

I don’t even remember WHY I got this bootleg at a comic con other than maybe my friends and I heard it was gory. LORD is it gory. This is a ridiculously over-the-top story of a man put into a diabolical prison and forced to not just survive but to escape. That man is Riki-O, who, with his strong resolve and super strength must bring the prison and its dangerous lackeys down.

This…is…something.

Absolutely ridiculous and mind-bendingly gory, this is a must-see for fans of Hong Kong weirdness.

REALLY ROSIE

This charming animated television movie melds the music of Carole King with the art of Maurice Sendak and is a musical about a little girl who envisions herself as a star. Along with her friends, the Nutshell  kids, Rosie puts on a production about her life of stardom and tragedy, all done to song.

It’s an odd little throwback that I grew up with and has fantastic music and some strange, strange vibes.

If you’re a fan of strange, old animated films this is a winner. It’s sweet, and weird, and really, the soundtrack is great.

RUNNING TIME

Can a Bruce Campbell movie be under the radar?

Yes, yes it can.

This one has Bruce playing it straight as part of a group of bank robbers on the run after a job goes south. The film plays in ‘real’ time and is a great display of Campbell’s acting chops and is a very good crime thriller along the lines of RESERVOIR DOGS.

PIN

I remember seeing PIN on video in the ‘90s and it bugged me out. It’s a weird, weird, weird psychological horror film about a family that treats the father’s anatomy model as if it is real. It’s a very slow burn but so, so creepy and weird and well worth a look for fans of movies that give you the feeling of ants on your skin.

DOOMSDAY

With a MAD MAX vibe, this action thriller has seemingly been forgotten to time. It’s set in a dark future that is part apocalyptic and part medieval as the world as we knew it ends. This is an early Neil Marshall film and a ton of personality.

Very fun movie that deserves another look.

NEKROMANTIC 1 and 2

This is just to add a little spice to your life.
These oddies were notorious ‘90s movies that were the edge of the extreme of the day and still packs a punch. Both are about the sexual fetishization of corpses and how that obsession leads to dark changes in how people relate to the living. They are so gross, and so weird that darn it, maybe you need a little spice in that chili.

RELENTLESS

Judd Nelson as a serial killer in a William Lustig movie?

HECK YES!
This movie has been lost to the ages but MAN it’s so good. Nelson plays a wonderfully unhinged killer and this is a great ‘90s serial killer thriller for those of you that miss those halcyon days.

BONUS!

MISTER FROST
Is Jeff Goldblum really the devil or just a madman playing at being old scratch? The shrinks want to find out and so do we.

Another one lost to time with a great performance from Goldblum.
