“In Roots of Ash“:
“A secret older than Man hides within the woods of Munsonville, Michigan, a secret, a lie, and a war. The end of the world is coming, and it’s only a matter of whether it comes from servitude or fire. Don’t trust the woods.”
“In Roots of Ash” shares a similar origin to how “Cemetery Earth” came about: It started as a short story. I wrote a story about a father desperate to make his daughter’s Christmas dream come true, making a deal with witches…witches that were trees. This story became a short film, but it also became a seed. That seed blossomed into this book, but before then, there were several stories about the witch trees in the woods.
This book is pure folk horror.
Witches in the woods, and monsters in the night.
The book serves as a collection of these stories, as well as the closing of the chapter on Tilling Diem and his story in Munsonville, Michigan. This ties into “Road Kill” and “RoadKillers” and ends that saga, but this book isn’t needed to feel the story is complete. This is the punctuation at the end. Oh, the fun we writers have, eh?
The stories here are spooky, supernatural, and pure folk horror. If you are looking for a creepy, woodsy vibe, this is the one for you. It’s a great collection, and I love the Sisters Six.
