When I started putting this book together, a collection of short stories, my intention was to collect some of the meanest and nastiest stories I had written up to that time. I wanted to release a mean book that would haunt people. Some of the fun of writing, and writing short fiction especially, is the ability to write stories that hold no punches back, because, while they will stick with you, they won’t drag you over glass for dozens of hours and expect you to be happy for the trip. We all need a literary punch in the mouth to remind us that things aren’t always safe when the light leaves the room, and some evil is happy to operate under the full sun, as if daring someone to stop it.
